De Stille Stad – The Hushed City

The Story

The corona lockdown of March 2020 changed everyone’s worldview. Confined to our homes, we had to find a new way of living.

The loss of the old, comfortable, and familiar way of life and work led some to experience greater trauma than others. But it is clear that the crisis affected us all.

Composed of 19 songs from various times and languages, The Silent City is first and foremost a journey through the finest Romantic and Modern art song repertoire. At the same time, an underlying story emerges, as the songs are closely linked by text, key, and music.

Arriving in The Silent City (a song by Alma Mahler), the lonely traveler seems to have to abandon all hope. But then a spark of hope — a thanksgiving song raised by a child’s voice — gives the strength to move forward again, upwards toward the light. Morning breaks, and although the world looks the same, the soul knows it can continue differently, with a positive outlook for the future.

This song cycle not only offers an hour of beautiful live music but will also resonate with anyone processing grief and seeking comfort.
